Hubby is dieting again (grrrrrr)

To say that Gary, my husband, is a healthy eater would not be referring to the quality of the food he eats. He can chow down. Gary has decided that it is time to go on a diet again. Now, I know that I am not the only one who has to deal with how child like men can be. I mean, the most awful time in the world is when he gets a cold or flu. My sons can be the same way. Not that I do not appreciate the situation and want to help but come on, if I acted like that I certainly would hear about it. I thought that way back when Gary and I first got together the quitting smoking thing was bad. Man, he was miserable.

The diet he has decided he responds best to is the low carb diet. So, yesterday we had to go to the store and stock up on “snacks” for the week. Well, just so you know, if I ate what he considers dieting snacks I would gain 30 pounds. But, he usually does well on this diet. It’s anyone around him that suffers. To say, “He can be grumpy” would be putting it very lightly.
Gary’s doctor suggested this low carb diet when he ended up in the hospital with heart attack symptoms a few years ago and they found his cholesterol was sky high. His doctor told him that he would get a faster response to lowering his cholesterol on this diet than on medications that have serious side effects. I was so scared. I thought this would kill him for sure, but, the doctor was right. His cholesterol went down and he lost weight. The doctor did not however have any advise on how to deal with him during this time.

While we were at the store I purchased along with his “snacks” a very large cast iron skilllet (they don’t dent so easy). Just kidding (one can dream though, right?).
Personally, I do better with the standard cut down on portions, low fat, healthy foods type diet. It doesn’t matter it seems we both just gain it all back sooner or later.

Boy, it really is “hell” to grow old!

I have been lucky though.  My husband is 11 years older than I am so he gets to mosey on into senior life way before I do so that by the time it hits me I have lived with it for quite some time.  I must say though that my husband has aged gracefully.
Your at home and one day you wake up and boom you are on all kinds of medications and take tons of vitamins that are actually prescribed by your doctor.  And you are wondering where the hell all the time went and how it went so fast.
It is a big concern, future of our medical care with the issues of medical insurance in America today.
Trying to eat right and getting more and more into the growing organic craz.  When I was young my grandparents had a garden every year.  They knew what they needed to grow to make it to the next year.  We then worked on “putting it up”.  I mean, either canning it or freezing it.  We also made lots of jelly.  We hardly ever purchased fruit or vegetables from a grocery store.  Now everyone is so dependent on what the grocery store has in it.  I have been working on getting away from that and back to basics at home by gardening or going to a farmers market and only getting non perishables from the local supper market.
This year my husband helped me by setting up a container garden.  He set up frames of about 3’ x 5’  and we filled them with top soil and fertilizer and boy did we get a great starter garden.  We had 15 of the containers.  I grew beet, peas, beans, cabbage, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, peppers and of course tomatoes.  Now it is time to get ready for winter and cover the frames so they will be ready to use next year and this will cut down on all the weeds growing in the containers before you get a chance to plant too.
The weeding was amazingly easy and we live in what used to be a pasture lot for years.  I highly recommend this to anyone that wants to start gardening because you can do this in any size space.  The fresh vegetables are well worth it.
Now that I am home bound I do a lot of shopping online.  I did some price comparisons and sent for most of my seeds.  I found a couple of the major seed companies were running out of seeds due to the amount of people that are going back to “backyard gardening” now.  My advice is to shop early next year because I think it will be even worse.

Being hit suddenly with a rare disease: Myasthenia Gravis

About 5 years ago I woke up and could not see too well.  My eyelids would not open all the way.  I felt like I do sometimes when I have a cold and my sinuses are clogged up from allergies or a cold and can’t open my eyes all the way.  Only this time my right side of my face was numb too.  Not completely numb but like you had a tooth worked on and it was still numb from the Novocain.
Well, I went to work which at that time was about an hour away.  As the day went on I felt more numbness and my eye lids got worse.  I went to the main office up the street from my office to do a mail run and to met with my boss.  After the meeting, she asked me about my eyes.  I told her what I was feeling and she sent me home to get it checked out by the doctor.
That was the last day of work for me, 5 years ago.  I had the worse drive home in my life.  I went to the doctor the next day and saw a great nurse practitioner.  I told her my problems and she sent me to get some x-rays.  I told her I thought it was a bad sinus infection.  Well apparently she know better because I had the x-rays done that afternoon.   She said she did not see any signs of infection and wanted it checked out further.  She referred me to a Neurologist.
My neurologist set up a bunch of tests and soon got the diagnosis of “acute myasthenia gravis”.  This is a rare disease that affects the involuntary muscles usually starting with ocular.  So, I was started on medications and the rest is history.  The medications did put the disease in remission but apparently the damage was done for the eyes.  The severe blurred vision, double vision and sensitivity of light leaves me legally blind.  This disease is not curable but medication can put it into remission, as long as you take the medication.

You can find a ton of information on the internet to help explain it further.  My neurologist recommended that I search it out and read all I can on it to understand it better.
I do have some eye sight left and when sitting still I can read with the help of magnifiers.  But the double vision, blurred vision and the paralyzed muscles that make it so the eyes don’t move together make it hard on doing daily tasks.
People are funny, they understand complete blindness but not so much vision impaired.  I finally got a white cane to help with walking, shopping and all because I have so much difficulty with navigating uneven ground or even seeing at all in bright light.  But, for the most part I can take care of myself still and that really matters… to me.
