If you are properly prepared you can enjoy Fall Camping even if you are tent camping. The tents they make now are very different from the tents we had when I was younger. We live in a state that you are guaranteed to get rain at least one day you are camping. You will also need a tarp to cover the tent. It needs to be about 4 feet longer and wider than your tent. So if you have a 10×15 size tent you will need at least a 14×19 tarp. It can be bigger too. You need this even if you have a fly on your tent. When you are finished setting up your tent as per instructions then you slide on the tarp and bring it more forward where you have the entrance of your tent and you will have a covered entrance way. You can use trees to anchor it to or you can purchase extra tent poles at any place sporting goods are sold.
In this picture they really make use of the tarp!
This tent has a little of the tarp extended to give the entrance more cover.
This tent they are setting up the entrance (which is at the right on this picture) for cover.
Along with the proper tent you will need the right sleeping bag. We live in a area that gets very cold at night but we don’t need an extreme weather sleeping bag for fall. Sleeping bags are now rated for the temperature you can expect to be in so you may want to check that before buying. If you camp in an area that has colder nights at the beginning or later in your camping season then you will want a sleeping bag to fit the colder weather. My advice to you is to get a fleece blanket bag to line the sleeping bag. We use this in the summer or warmer days of camping when some nights are too warm for the sleeping bag. We got them very cheap at your favorite discount store and they zip up and roll up just like a sleeping bag. You can even get a sleeping bag for you best friend!
Next you will need rain wear. This can get pretty pricey so you will need to shop around. I have used the simple ponchos you can get very cheap anywhere and done very well with them. But, if we are going out on the boat I use a rain suit. Getting a good pair of rubbers to go over your favorite hiking or walking shoes is a good idea too.
We purchased a small propane heater for the colder nights also. They work well in a small space. They work well in a small space for more extreme weather too.
Of course you are going to need warm clothing. This can be sweats or even thermal underwear. Prepare for layering and you won’t go wrong. Everyone’s comfort level is different.
There are the basics for staying comfortable while Fall tent camping. Just remember that even if the tent has a fly or cover on it you will need a tarp to go over it. The tarp not only keeps out the rain but it helps to insulate the warm air too. We have been through some pretty severe downpours and stayed dry this way. I hope you and your family have a comfortable and fun tent camping experience. Any other tips or stories to share please share them in a comment.
