Elk in Upstate New York? I recently got a post from a forum I subscribe to that had information on a proposition of Elk being brought back to New York. The post contained the following:
Elk Foundation – Catskill Mountains Chapter, PO Box 496, Phoenicia, NY 12464. This is one group that is pushing elk. There are many of these elk pushing groups in the state. They are mostly hunters and non-gardeners! Founded in 1984, it’s a nonprofit, has 110,000 members, 12 NYS Chapters and has generated 90 million dollars to conserve and enhance nearly 2.7 million acres of wildlife habitat across North America for elk.
I come from a family of not just hunters but wildlife conservationist. One of the first things I learned when I moved to this beautiful state was how the hunter is a major part of the wildlife conservation.

I was raised in an area just outside of a densely populated area in California. I was not exposed to this kind of wildlife management. I did not begin to understand this until I took a hunting safety course. Which is required for anyone in New York to take before you can legally hunt here and acquire a hunting license.
My husband is an advocate of wildlife management and participates in teaching the hunting courses here.
I think it would be exciting to see Elk brought back to flourish in the Northern United States. I think it would need to be properly managed but there certainly is a lot of this state that they could occupy and live well in without being disturbed by the human life just have the black bear and now wild turkey.
My husband tells us that when he was young the wild turkey was not as populated here as it is now and that you very rarely saw them. Now, they are everywhere here in Upstate and this was managed through the states Wildlife Management.
Like Moose, Elk are a beautiful animal. Elk live on a diet of mostly grass, however in the winter they will branch out into shrubs, tree bark and twigs. Elk live in a variety of habitats all over the world from rain forests to dry desert valleys and hardwood forests. Before European settlement of North America it was believed to be home to nearly 10 million elk, by the end of 1900 there where less than 100,000 elk from cost to cost. Thanks to great wild life management the elk herds numbers are closer to one million. The elk has a very similar set up to the common cow as far as its digestive track. An elk’s stomach has four chambers: the first stores food, and the other three digest it.

According to the North American Elk Breeders Assoc. There has been an increase in the Elk ranching tremendously over the past 20 years, and particularly in the last decade. In 1990, 35 prominent elk ranchers came together to found the North American Elk Breeders Association, or NAEBA, to promote elk ranching as an agricultural pursuit. Headquartered near Kansas City, Missouri, NAEBA today has more than 1800 members from the United States, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia.
New York does have an Association set up by deer and elk farmers within the State of New York who actively support farming and hunting and the protection of productive farmland and open space. You can visit their site: and get more information on their progress.
