Hunting season opens next weekend here in Upstate New York. The little camper is moved onto the hunting land. Also a large tarp is staked down over the camper to help keep it from leaking. It’s only a 1960, 18 foot camper so it needs to be babied a little. The tarp will also help to keep the heat in longer.

There is a great site to check out the times for the different hunting locations in New York.

Since it is only a week away for opening day, today final preparations are being made and the guys are all getting together to finish up the camp set up and make final decisions on the food. They make sure everything is ready at the camp and Tree Stands are in place and ready to use.

One very important thing that has to be done ahead is; they have to go all around the property lines and make sure all the “Posted” signs are up. This makes it illegal for anyone not a member of the hunting camp to hunt on this property. This is strictly unforced too. The group that hunts at this camp all trust each other and are familiar with their focus on hunting safety. It is a private camp and anyone who violates this is to be arrested and prosecuted. It has to be this way to insure the hunter’s safety.

Hunting safety must be first and foremost in the minds of the hunters. They are taught this from very young. We have been involved with the Wildlife Conservation and Hunter Safety taught here in New York since the kids were very young and my husband taught the Hunter Safety classes for years.

Tonight and the rest of the week will be focused on getting the guns and ammo ready. Most of the time on these extended trips the guys get together and all decide on the menu. For hunting camp we have a cousin that shops for and prepares the menu and gets it all ready for camp (with close family help), then they figure out a fair price for the meals and charge accordingly. Usually they can do this for about $5.00 a meal and the guys brag about how good they eat at hunting camp. It may be more than that this year with the price of food going up but you still can’t get a meal for that price. They do an awesome job.

How do you organize your hunting trips? Have you got any good tips to share? Leave us a comment and share them.
