A camping trip preparation should always include the possibility of camping during wet weather, you can plan in advance and still enjoy the trip. If you follow some important camping tips, you can avoid getting into unpleasant situations. If you wait for a perfect weather weekend, you may end up going nowhere. Therefore, you had better go on such trips with good preparations. Here are some that will make a whole lot of difference between a memorable camping experience and a bad one.
When you are packing for the camping trip, you must be very careful with your selection of apparel. You will need footwear, pants, jacket, and hat that are waterproof. I use a ball cap most of the time when I camp anyway because of the spider (huge!) that fell onto my head during a down pour once at camp. You can even consider a hat with a brim going all the way round, something like a fishing had the we use on the boat.
When people look for camping tips, they often focus on the quality of tent while blissfully ignoring the issue of personal apparel. The truth is you can make most tents water proof now with a can of spray water proofing and a tarp/fly. But you can really have a miserable if you do not focus on the important things like having the proper apparel. If the weather is still warm out you will want the pants to be waterproof but still made of breathable fabric. The same is applicable for your waterproof jacket as well. You should also pay attention the kind of footwear. Rubber boots are great, but if you are planning activities like hiking, you had better consider buying a pair of hiking boots.
Don’t forget to bring a tarp for the firewood. One of the things we look for after a downpour during your camping trip is a warm fire. While you are unpacking you don’t want to forget to stack and cover the firewood. Getting wet wood to burn can be a highly frustrating experience if not impossible. To avoid such unpleasant experiences, do not forget to cover the firewood with a tarp.
One of the best camping tips while choosing the right area for putting up the tent is obviously look for the most level area but in doing so you want to watch for the tree roots too. Next, look up. Are there branches of trees overhead? If yes, it can be a risky venture to put up your tent there. In a bad weather condition the branches may fall on the tent. Things can be worse if the branch falls on someone. That is the reason why it is always advisable to build tents in an open area.
We always bring kitchen shelter or as we call it an easy-up, with flaps all around. You can add this to your camping gear pretty cheaply now. This will provide you a nice place to enjoy your time inside the camp while it is raining outside. In Upstate New York you always get rain on camping trip so we plan for it on every trip.
Do not forget to bring some games along. We bring dominoes, dice and a deck of cards. Overall, if you keep all these camping tips in mind, you are definitely going to have great fun even during wet weather.
Do you have some tips to add? How about an experience to share. I would love to hear it, please leave it in a comment.
